Summary
Artist Sheree Kinlyside was born in Young, NSW, in 1955 to parents with a creative bent. During her childhood in Young, Kinlyside attended twice-weekly art classes at the local TAFE until she left home at sixteen to pursue a nursing career. Although her personal interest in art continued, her time over the next decade and more was spent pursuing a career largely in mental health. In 1981, however, she was able to re-immerse herself in her passion for art when she travelled Britain and Europe for almost a year. Upon returning to Australia and work in the health field, in 1984 Kinlyside found herself in Townsville where, after six years, she decided to pursue her creative talents.
Over the next ten years she received hundreds of commissions and was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes. Having graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from James Cook University (JCU) in 2000, she then put her skills in design and print to use in her role as Director of Red Rag Press, which she established in Townsville in 2006. Red Rag Press productions have included limited editions of fine press prints and artists' books using contemporary, vintage and antique printing presses. Her enthusiasm for artists' books stemmed from her experience assisting with book production for two Townsville publishers - Lyre Bird Press and Monsoon Publishing - in the late 1990s.
Sheree Kinlyside's work has been exhibited internationally and copies of her unique and limited edition books are held in various libraries in the UK, Ireland, USA, New Zealand and Australia.
