Summary
Born in Townsville in 1953, Gordon “James” Brown’s art practices encompassed drawing, painting, printmaking, publishing artists’ books, and sculpture. Brown was the recipient of over fifty art awards between 1977 and 1993, at which point he ceased entering works in competitions for philosophical reasons. From 1983 onwards, however, his art works were represented in numerous exhibitions. Brown began teaching visual arts full-time at TAFE in 1978 and later taught at James Cook University. During this time he produced a solid body of research and publications. Prior to this he had held diverse positions as a bingo caller, shop assistant, part-time art instructor, and high school teacher.
