Summary
Bowen Downs is located close to Aramac in central Queensland. It is one of the stations established by the Scottish-Australian Company.
William Landsborough and Nathaniel Buchanan made the initial exploration of this area. Landsborough recognised its quality for raising sheep. He wanted to apply for a licence but did not have the capital to stock the land immediately, as was required by the Land Act. The Scottish-Australian Company provided the capital for the venture.
Buchanan was the first manager. He set out from Sydney in 1861 and explored overland from Bowen Downs to Port Denison. By 1862 he had discovered a viable route for men and stock.
The station consisted of 26 runs, Bowen Downs, Betawong, Crossmoor, Horsedale, Bramville, Bangall, Balang, Pickwick, Goshen, Budgeragar, Gemini, Rayban, Dunculla, Oatway, Cornwall, Coreena, Corinda, Emu Plains, Rainsby, Plains (another), and Acacia Downs. The Bowen Downs run was appointed head station as it was centrally situated. By 1863, several outstations had been established at good watering places.
This collection was donated by the Aramac Shire Council in 1977. It consists of diaries spanning from 1885 to 1971 and accounts books from as early as 1869 to the 1950s.
Name Index: Index of personal names appearing in the records of Bowen Downs records in the years 1870 - 1881.
Entries are by surname, except in cases where only a given name appears in the station records. If an employee is not located under surname, check under his or her given name which will appear in the surname column if that was the only name recorded. Chinese names are listed in station records in a variety of ways. While, for example, the Chinese name Ah Foo Chang is likely to be indexed under C, variations occur. It is advisable to check the index under all elements of a Chinese name.
Documents written in the past may use words and descriptions when referring to Indigenous or other peoples which would be considered inappropriate today. Where station records have referred to employees by such terms, this terminology has been reflected in our notes. We have retained these terms in the interests of accuracy and regret any offence they may cause.
A question mark -? - indicates that the writing in the original is unclear or that the date is unknown or unclear.
