Atkinson Family; North Queensland; Pioneers; Pastoralists
Summary
The Atkinson family were pioneer pastoralists in the settlement of the Kennedy District of North Queensland and were amongst the first rush of settlers in the 1860's. Like so many other early pastoralists, they made the long overland trek from Victoria where they had first settled.
In 1862, in partnership with Ezra Firth, the Atkinsons settled Mt. Surprise Station and began their long association with North Queensland, during which time they held many well known properties including Farnham near Ingham, Wairuna, Greenvale, Valley of Lagoons, Gunnawarra and Mungalla.
Many of the early difficulties they encountered are recorded in the manuscript, The Long Trail, which forms part of this collection.
Marie Irvine's biography of Glen Atkinson is in the Godschall Johnson Archive at 163R (see Related Links).
