The New Moon Theatre Company was established in 1982 under the direction of Paul Iles. Its aim was to create a fully professional resident theatre company in north Queensland and was variously based in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton.
The board, chaired by, among others, Diane Cilento, included representatives of up to six local authorities. The organisation was formally registered as the Central and Northern Theatre Company but always traded as New Moon and was eventually registered as the New Moon Theatre Company Ltd.
The Company's financial position was always difficult with heavy dependence on government grants. Despite various periods of limited prosperity, it was liquidated in 1991. Its youth arm, La Luna, still operates in Townsville.
The collection includes financial records, correspondence, play scripts and information on New Moon performances.
