Summary
Although discussions involving local insurance companies and businessmen were held regularly from September 1879, the first Fire Brigade Board was not formed until May 1882, with Mr J F Richardson appointed superintendent. The first fire station was built in 1887-88 in Flinders Street, between the post office and the municipal offices, and was staffed by a volunteer brigade of ten officers. The Townsville Fire Brigade Board was dissolved on 30 June 1990 and became the Queensland Fire Service, Townsville.
