Summary
This photograph depicts a group of two men, four women, and three little girls enjoying a picnic at a sandy, treed area. This photograph was taken in North Queensland but the exact location is unknown. A tea cloth is spread out on the ground and upon it are what appear to be various cakes or breads. On and near the cloth are cups, saucers, plates - with a sandwich on one, one or two knives and a spoon, a billycan, large chipped enamel jug, and metal tub. The woman at left is wearing a light-coloured blouse with leg-o'-mutton sleeves, long skirt with frilled hem, and belt with buckle.
The young woman beside her wears a blouse in a print fabric with long sleeves gathered at the wrist, and a belt with buckle. Next to her a young woman sits on a log holding a toddler. The woman wears a lacy, light-coloured blouse with long sleeves and a lightweight skirt of print fabric. The toddler wears a light-coloured pinafore over a dark, long-sleeved shirt, dark shoes and socks. The two little girls seated on the ground both wear smocks, one in a dark velvet and the other in a lacy, light-coloured fabric. The two men both squat on their haunches while they talk, with one holding a stick and the other a teacup. One wears a felt hat, dark short-sleeved shirt, dark trousers, and shoes. The other wears a pith helmet, light-coloured long-sleeved shirt, cravat, and dark trousers. The young woman seated on the ground wears a dress of medium hue with frilled neckline and belt with buckle. She holds a handkerchief in her hand and a cup and saucer on her lap. While the women and children are all bareheaded, several hats lie around the picnic area.
The photographs in this collection were taken by the Reverend Frederic Charles Hall (1878-1926) during the period 1902-1909 when he was the Anglican Curate appointed to Georgetown in North Queensland. Hall's foremost hobby was photography. He used both a half-plate camera with tripod made by J. Lancaster & Son, Birmingham and a quarter-plate Austral No. 3 made by the Australian company, Baker & Rouse. Glass negatives from Ilford and Austral were used; developing was done by the photographer himself and printing by exposure to sunlight.
