Summary
This photograph depicts a family group of five children, two older girls and three younger boys, posing in front of some large rocks, timber off-cuts, and some rough post and rail pens. Both girls wear their hair partially tied atop their heads in a bun with loose hair behind, and both are wearing dark shoes and stockings. The older girl wears a light-coloured, long-sleeved blouse and dark-coloured, 3/4 length skirt. The younger girl wears a shorter, smock dress under a light-coloured pinafore. The three young boys are all barefooted and wearing knee-length shorts. Only the youngest, perched upon a rock, wears a hat. He wears a loose, smock-style shirt, while the oldest boy wears a long-sleeved shirt with a sailor collar and the third boy wears a long-sleeved shirt with a Peter Pan collar. This photograph was taken in North Queensland but the exact location is unknown.
The photographs in this collection were taken by the Reverend Frederic Charles Hall (1878-1926) during the period 1902-1909 when he was the Anglican Curate appointed to Georgetown in North Queensland. Hall's foremost hobby was photography. He used both a half-plate camera with tripod made by J. Lancaster & Son, Birmingham and a quarter-plate Austral No. 3 made by the Australian company, Baker & Rouse. Glass negatives from Ilford and Austral were used; developing was done by the photographer himself and printing by exposure to sunlight.
