Summary

This photograph depicts a man and a woman on a loaded, four-wheeled wagon being pulled by a yoked team of four horses across an open stretch of land. The man is well-dressed with cuffed trousers, boots, a collared shirt with sleeves rolled up, and a pith helmet. He is also holding a whip. Little can be seen of the woman, obscured behind the man, beyond her wide-brimmed hat which is covered with a net veil drawn in at the neck. At her feet is a rectangular woven basket. The dray is loaded with many trunks, baskets, a hatbox and more all securely tied down with rope. This photograph was taken in the North Queensland outback but the exact location is unknown.

The photographs in this collection were taken by the Reverend Frederic Charles Hall (1878-1926) during the period 1902-1909 when he was the Anglican Curate appointed to Georgetown in North Queensland. Hall's foremost hobby was photography. He used both a half-plate camera with tripod made by J. Lancaster & Son, Birmingham and a quarter-plate Austral No. 3 made by the Australian company, Baker & Rouse. Glass negatives from Ilford and Austral were used; developing was done by the photographer himself and printing by exposure to sunlight.
