Summary

An excerpt from the Introduction:

The letters reproduced in this book were written between 1866 and 1871 from or about Nulla Nulla, a sheep station in tropical Queensland: the great majority by Rebecca Cain and her husband George to the latter's grandmother in Melbourne. The experiences they recount were not remarkable in the sense of being rare in that locality and era; on the contrary, it would be safe to assume that every family living in outback North Queensland at that time shared some of them and that some families shared them all. Contemporary accounts of those experiences, on the other hand, are extremely rare. That gives to these letters a lasting interest and value for present-day readers.
